Chesterton was a large man, standing 1.93 meters and weighing around 134 kilograms. His girth gave rise to a famous anecdote. On a meeting occasion he remarked to his friendly enemy George Bernard Shaw: 'To look at you, anyone would think there was a famine in England.' Shaw retorted: 'To look at you, anyone would think you caused it"

I veneziani di Chesterton

Secondo Gilbert Keith Chesterton, il viaggiatore romantico che approda a Venezia e che, incantato dall'esotismo della città, s'innamora dei suoi abitanti, lo fa in quanto questi per lui sono solo veneziani. Mentre la strada sotto casa, quella invece è abitata da uomini. C'è da dire che se il viaggiatore romantico vede i veneziani in quanto esotici, questi da parte loro fanno tutto il possibile per non deluderlo. Fanno appunto i "veneziani". (Da cui l'espressione "Non fare il veneziano!") Ma presto si stancano di recitare la parte, e tornano ad essere uomini come tutti gli altri. Spariscono i "veneziani" e San Marco si dissolve nella nebbia.
